10.50 Social Psychology and Flight Deck Management
10.50.2 Explain how outside resources, such as ATC, engineers and other pilots can contribute to a pilot’s management of a flight.
Outside resources, such as air traffic controllers (ATC), engineers and other pilots, can make an important contribution to a pilot's management of a flight.
1. Air Traffic Controllers (ATC)
ATC personnel provide valuable assistance to pilots throughout a flight.
They can provide:
- traffic information;
- weather information;
- assistance with routing;
- clearances and instructions; and
- separation between aircraft in controlled airspace.
ATC can also assist pilots during take-off, landing and while navigating through controlled airspace.
This support can reduce pilot workload, improve situational awareness and contribute to safer flight management.
