10.2 Airmanship and Responsibility
10.2.2 Describe key features of good and safe airmanship.
Airmanship is the consistent use of sound knowledge, skills, judgement and discipline to operate an aircraft safely and efficiently.
Good and safe airmanship includes:
Situational awareness
Maintaining an accurate picture of:
where the aircraft is;
what the aircraft is doing;
what is happening around it; and
what is likely to happen next.
Planning and preparation
Being properly prepared for the flight, including:
weather;
fuel;
aircraft performance;
route and airspace;
NOTAMs; and
possible alternatives.
Judgement and decision-making
Recognising hazards, assessing risks and making safe and timely decisions.
A good pilot is prepared to change a plan, divert or discontinue a flight when conditions are unsuitable.
